💡 Learning Path: Start with the 4 Dichotomies to understand the basics, then dive into Cognitive Functions to see how personality really works. Once you understand functions, explore Function Stacks to see how they combine, then study all 16 Types. Finally, test your knowledge with quizzes and scenarios!
The four dichotomies are the surface level of MBTI. They tell you someone's preferences across four dimensions. Each type has one letter from each pair, creating 16 combinations (2×2×2×2 = 16).

E vs I: Extraversion vs Introversion

Where you direct and receive energy

Extraversion (E)

  • Energized by social interaction
  • Think out loud, process externally
  • Prefer action to reflection
  • Wide circle of friends
  • Draw energy from outer world

Introversion (I)

  • Energized by alone time
  • Think internally before speaking
  • Prefer reflection to action
  • Deep connections with few
  • Draw energy from inner world
Real Example: At a party, an Extravert charges up by mingling and chatting with everyone. An Introvert might enjoy the party but needs quiet time afterward to recharge.

S vs N: Sensing vs Intuition

How you take in information

Sensing (S)

  • Focus on concrete facts
  • Trust what is real and tangible
  • Present-oriented
  • Practical and realistic
  • Learn through direct experience

Intuition (N)

  • Focus on patterns and meanings
  • Trust hunches and insights
  • Future-oriented
  • Theoretical and abstract
  • Learn through concepts
Real Example: Looking at a tree, a Sensor sees the physical details: bark texture, leaf color, height. An Intuitive sees symbolism: growth, life cycles, seasons of change.

T vs F: Thinking vs Feeling

How you make decisions

Thinking (T)

  • Decide based on logic
  • Value objectivity and fairness
  • Direct and frank
  • Focus on truth
  • Analyze pros and cons

Feeling (F)

  • Decide based on values
  • Value harmony and empathy
  • Tactful and diplomatic
  • Focus on impact on people
  • Consider personal significance
Real Example: Firing an underperforming employee - A Thinker focuses on business needs and performance metrics. A Feeler considers the person's circumstances, feelings, and how to deliver the news compassionately.

J vs P: Judging vs Perceiving

How you approach the outside world

Judging (J)

  • Prefer structure and planning
  • Like things decided
  • Work first, play later
  • Deadline-driven
  • Want closure

Perceiving (P)

  • Prefer flexibility and spontaneity
  • Keep options open
  • Mix work and play
  • Deadline-flexible
  • Comfortable with ambiguity
Real Example: Planning a vacation - A Judger books everything in advance with a detailed itinerary. A Perceiver books the flight and figures out the rest as they go.
🔑 Key Insight: These four letters give you the TYPE (like INFP or ESTJ), but they don't explain HOW the mind works. That's where Cognitive Functions come in - they show the actual mental processes behind each type!
Cognitive functions are the core engine of personality. The four-letter type tells you WHAT preferences you have, but the functions explain WHY and HOW you use them. Each function comes in two attitudes: Introverted (i) focuses inward, Extraverted (e) focuses outward.
🔍

Ti - Introverted Thinking

Internal logic and frameworks. "Does this make sense to ME?"

Thinking

Te - Extraverted Thinking

External efficiency and systems. "What's the most effective way?"

Thinking
💖

Fi - Introverted Feeling

Personal values and authenticity. "Is this true to who I am?"

Feeling
🤝

Fe - Extraverted Feeling

Group harmony and connection. "How is everyone feeling?"

Feeling
📝

Si - Introverted Sensing

Memory and past experiences. "This reminds me of..."

Sensing

Se - Extraverted Sensing

Present moment awareness. "What's happening right now?"

Sensing
🔮

Ni - Introverted Intuition

Singular insights and vision. "I know where this is going..."

Intuition
💡

Ne - Extraverted Intuition

Multiple possibilities and connections. "What if we...?"

Intuition
Every personality type uses 4 cognitive functions in a specific order called a stack. This order determines your natural strengths and weaknesses. The top functions are conscious and strong, while the bottom functions are unconscious and weak.

The Four Stack Positions

1. Dominant Function (Hero) 🦸

Your superpower. Most natural and effortless. This is "who you are" at your core. You use this function most consciously and skillfully.

2. Auxiliary Function (Supportive Parent) 🛡️

Your co-pilot. Supports and balances your dominant. Well-developed and helpful. Opposite attitude from dominant (if dominant is introverted, auxiliary is extraverted).

3. Tertiary Function (Eternal Child) 🎈

Less developed and childlike. Can provide stress relief or cause problems. Same attitude as dominant. Often develops in midlife.

4. Inferior Function (Aspirational) 🎯

Your weakness and blind spot. Source of stress but also growth. When developed, represents your highest aspirations. Same attitude as auxiliary.

Stack Rules and Patterns

  • Alternating Attitudes: Stack alternates I-E-I-E or E-I-E-I
  • Function Pairs: Functions come in opposites: Ti-Fe, Te-Fi, Se-Ni, Si-Ne
  • Balance Rule: If dominant is Judging (T/F), auxiliary is Perceiving (S/N), and vice versa
  • Development: You develop top functions first (childhood), bottom functions later (adulthood)
  • Stress Response: Under extreme stress, inferior function can "grip" you - you act unlike yourself

Example Stack: INFP

Dominant: Fi (Introverted Feeling)
INFP's core is deep personal values and authenticity. They know who they are and what matters to them.
Auxiliary: Ne (Extraverted Intuition)
Explores possibilities and creative ideas. Balances Fi by connecting inner values to outer world.
Tertiary: Si (Introverted Sensing)
Personal memories and comfort. Can be nostalgic or stuck in the past when overdone.
Inferior: Te (Extraverted Thinking)
External organization and efficiency. INFP's weakness - may struggle with practical systems.

Example Stack: ENTJ

Dominant: Te (Extraverted Thinking)
ENTJ's core is organizing external world efficiently. Natural leaders and strategists.
Auxiliary: Ni (Introverted Intuition)
Long-term vision and strategic insights. Helps Te know WHAT goals to pursue.
Tertiary: Se (Extraverted Sensing)
Present moment awareness. Can be impulsive or seek excitement when imbalanced.
Inferior: Fi (Introverted Feeling)
Personal values and emotions. ENTJ's weakness - may struggle with feelings and empathy.
💡 Master Tip: Understanding stacks is what separates beginners from experts. Two types can share 3 letters but have completely different stacks! INFP (Fi-Ne-Si-Te) and INFJ (Ni-Fe-Ti-Se) are completely different personalities despite looking similar.

Read each scenario and identify which cognitive function is being demonstrated. This is how you develop real-world MBTI expertise!

Scenario 1: The Group Project

Sarah immediately takes charge of the group project. She creates a shared spreadsheet, assigns tasks to each member, sets clear deadlines, and schedules weekly check-ins. When someone suggests a different approach, she evaluates it based on whether it's more efficient than the current plan.

Which function is Sarah using?

Scenario 2: The Quiet Observer

During a heated debate, Marcus stays quiet but is clearly thinking deeply. Later, he explains that while everyone was arguing, he noticed several logical contradictions in both sides' arguments. He breaks down exactly why neither argument is internally consistent, using precise language and asking probing questions.

Which function is Marcus using?

Scenario 3: The Brainstormer

Emma's mind races with possibilities. "What if we combined X with Y? Oh, that reminds me of Z! Have you thought about approaching it from this angle? I saw this totally unrelated thing yesterday that could apply here..." She generates ten ideas in five minutes, connecting seemingly random concepts.

Which function is Emma using?

Scenario 4: The Harmony Keeper

At dinner, Jamie notices tension between two friends. She immediately shifts the conversation to a lighter topic, makes a joke that gets everyone laughing, and later checks in privately with each person to make sure they're okay. She can't stand when the group atmosphere feels "off."

Which function is Jamie using?

Scenario 5: The Values Guardian

When offered a high-paying job, Alex turns it down because the company's values don't align with their personal ethics. "I know it doesn't make logical sense financially, but I wouldn't be able to live with myself. This just feels wrong to me at a core level. I need to stay true to who I am."

Which function is Alex using?

Scenario 6: The Visionary

During a company meeting, Jordan suddenly speaks up: "I know exactly where this is heading. If we continue this strategy, in six months we'll face X problem, which will lead to Y consequence. I can see the pattern clearly." When asked how they know, Jordan struggles to explain - they just "see" it.

Which function is Jordan using?

Scenario: Planning a Vacation

ISTJ (Si-Te-Fi-Ne)

Researches destinations thoroughly, reads reviews, creates detailed itinerary with backup plans, books everything in advance, packs a week early with a checklist.

ENFP (Ne-Fi-Te-Si)

Gets excited about possibilities, books the flight on impulse, has ten ideas for things to do, forgets to book hotel until last minute, packs the morning of departure.

INTJ (Ni-Te-Fi-Se)

Has a strategic vision of the ideal vacation, optimizes for efficiency and experiences, creates a flexible framework, minimizes wasted time.

ESFP (Se-Fi-Te-Ni)

Books whatever sounds fun in the moment, goes with the flow, discovers things spontaneously, seeks exciting sensory experiences.

Scenario: Solving a Problem at Work

INTP (Ti-Ne-Si-Fe)

Analyzes problem deeply, considers multiple angles, builds mental models, comes up with innovative solution, struggles to implement it.

ENTJ (Te-Ni-Se-Fi)

Identifies problem quickly, develops strategic solution, organizes team and resources, implements immediately, measures results.

INFJ (Ni-Fe-Ti-Se)

Sees underlying pattern causing problem, considers impact on people, develops holistic solution that addresses root cause and maintains harmony.

ESTP (Se-Ti-Fe-Ni)

Spots problem in real-time, takes immediate action, troubleshoots on the fly, uses practical hands-on approach, adapts as needed.

💡 Key Insight: Notice how each type's function stack creates completely different approaches to the same situation. This is why understanding functions is so powerful - you can predict and understand behavior patterns!
